Windows 2000 Setup Instructions

Follow the procedure below to setup a new dial-up connection on your Windows 2000 machine.

  • First Left-click on the "Start" button in the lower left of your screen.
  • Move up to "Settings", then Left-click on "Network and Dial-up Connections".

  • Then you will see a window pop up.
  • You will see an icon that says "Make New Connection". Double Left-click on this icon.
  • A Network Connection Wizard box will appear, Left-click on "Next".
  • You will be given several choices on how to connect to the Internet on this next page. Choose the one that says "Dial-up to the Internet: Connect to the Internet using my phone line (modem or ISDN)." Then Left-click on "Next". (see picture below.)

  • Then it asks, "Which method do you want to use to connect to the Internet". Select "Connect using my phone line."
  • Next it will ask you to type in the phone number you dial to connect to the internet. Leave the Area code box empty and then in the phone number box type 956-3875 (Ames Area) or 433-9433 (Boone Area) and just a little farther down you will see a check mark next to "Dial using the area code and dialing properties". Uncheck this check mark by Left-clicking on it.

  • Then Left-click on "Next".
  • It will then ask you for your "Username" and "Password". Type in the Username and Password you set-up will us, then Left-click on "Next".
  • Next it will ask you for the name of the connection, type in "OpenCom" and Left-click "Next".
  • And you're all done, Left-click on "Finish".
  • Now Right-click on the "OpenCom" Icon and move down to "Properties" and Left-click.
  • A window will pop up and you will see several tabs along the top that read, "General", "Options", "Security", and "Networking". Left-click on the one that reads "Options". In the "Dialing options" area make sure these items have a check mark next to them, "Display progress while connecting", "Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc.", and "Prompt for phone number". Then Left-click on "OK" at the bottom of the window.
  • Then Right-click on the "OpenCom" Icon again and move your cursor over "Create Shortcut" and Left-click. You will probably get a Window's message that says, "Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?", you want to Left-click on "Yes".
  • Now you are ready to connect.

Connection to OpenCom

  • Now that you have a "Shortcut to OpenCom" Icon on your desktop and have finished setting up your dial-up configuration. Just simply Double-click on the "Shortcut to OpenCom".
  • A connection box will appear and ask for your "Username" and "Password", input the username and password you set up with us, check the phone number it is dialing to ensure it is dialing the right number and then Left-click on "Connect"
